Can someone help me ID this box? I couldn't find a roster for the 4th US Arty. So don't know if this is a period piece or repro.... thanks!
IMHO it is a repro, it is extremely rare to find an ammunition box in such great shape with its top, in addition, with it being in such good shape, there should be a stencil with the original contents very visible. Making matters worse, the box is listed to arguably the most famous battery during the war, the one commanded by Alonzo Cushing. Looking at their roster there is only one Thomas, an enlisted man, with the first name John.
A very well made and period correct box, but in way too good shape.

The 4th U.S. Artillery Battery A is better known today as Cushing's Battery. This box, in my opinion, is very likely a reproduction given its good condition. As has been pointed out very few of the original boxes survive today.
