Can someone help me with this?

The name is A. G. Anderson and it seems to be 1st Ga. State Troops Capt. _____ Co. __ ____________________

Not that you don't know this, but I was surprised to know these were Union troops! I'll keep looking for officers in the Companies…

Happy to help. This document that you asked about is a 1919 witness statement. The witness, Duckett, answers the question:

When, where and in what Company and Regiment did A G Anderson enlist during war from 1861 to 1863? (Give date and place)
1st Ga state troops Capt. Howel's Co. 8 (or 18) miles above Atlanta.

In another document in A G Anderson's pension file - a 1910 application - he says "near Atlanta Ga Early 1862. Co A First Gs State Line" and off to the side, he clarifies - Howell's Co.

And on yet another document (1919) in the same file, A G Anderson calls it "Albert Howell's Co."

Mrs. Laura is absolutely amazing and one of my favorite people. She has helped me immensely in the past.

Could it be "July" and not "early"?

Maybe Capt. Augustus Thompson went my "Jim"?
No. He went by A.C. Thompson. His gg grandson still lives on A C Thompson's farm. Maybe whoever filled out the form didn't recall Augustus Columbus Thompson's name? Is this a witness or the actual veteran's application?

"Colonel Thomas" could be
  • Edward Lloyd Thomas who was the original Col of the 35th GA until he was promoted to BG.
  • E.L.'s brother Col. Henry Philip Thomas of the 16th GA who was killed at Fort Sanders.
  • Colonel Thomas W. Thomas who organized the 15th GA at Athens.
Captain Jim Thompson could be
  • James R Thompson of 10th GA Militia
  • Or any number of Captains with last name Thompson who were recorded by initials J and whatever else
Captain Tom Ross could be
  • Thomas Lafayette Ross, Captain of G, 16th GA (elevated after A C Thompson was wounded.)
  • Roland Thomas Ross, Captain of H, 6th GA State Guards

Since whoever filled out the form recalled Captain Thompson and Captain Ross in succession - and since there was a Colonel Thomas commanding the 16th Georgia (albeit a short time) I'd say it's pretty strong evidence that the person in question served in G/16th GA. Even though he called Augustus Columbus Thompson "Jim"

Did the soldier live in Jefferson, Jackson County, Georgia in 1861? Two companies in the 16th GA came from Jackson. Company B was mostly from Subdivision 45 and Lee Randolph District -- while Company G was men mostly from Jefferson - Districts 243 and 245.

This is my great great grandfather that I have been trying to nail down whether or not he was in the 16th infantry. I was 97% sure and now after your post I am about 99.5% sure.
According to the 1860 census, he is listed in the Lee Randolph district of Jackson County. His name is Jackson Hilliard Randolph and a lot of times his records get confused with Hilliard Judge Randolph, who was in the same company. I think his service records were either lost or ended up getting combined with HJ's since their initials are so similar.
