I've been given mixed thoughts and opinions on this button and was hoping someone here might be able to help. I know it's a NC button, but wanted to see if it's pre, during or post war

Post CW also.

I love the state militia buttons! They are fun to collect ! Nice addition or start of a collection thanks for sharing!

I'm not trying to argue with you at all on this one but I did find this in a book on NC buttons. View attachment 447233
Dating Scovill buttons can be a minefield but the 2 stars and only one circle of dots is post war. The one in the book page you posted has no stars.
Backmark-Scovill920
Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G Co. (o is underlined) / (star) WATERBURY (star)" dm, large letters inner ring of dots, no outer ring, manufactured after the Civil War.

The Scovill company in its various forms made buttons from the 1820's until the 1960's. There are likely well over a hundred different style backmarks using the Scovill name. You do need a good reference book to help date them. You can easily see the difference in the backmarks between your button and the button in the book you have it on. The one in the book has the Scovill name between an inner and outer circle, a recognized Civil War era backmark. Yours has an inner circle but no outer circle, a typical post-war backmark. Can be very confusing, as some button faces looked the same during and after the war, and the only way to date them is to accurately date the backmark.

They just had to make it aggravatin!! Thank you for the info!

To me they don't look original how much did you pay for them??
Post war buttons are far more affordable but still should be paid attention to and collected. The ones posted are real post war buttons and not reproductions. The backmarks can be tricky but you'll notice the lack of the second ring and addition of stars. They look very similar but the slightest of variations could mean the difference between a $15 button and a $250+ button. Other post war buttons have bimetallic construction too. 3 piece post war construction buttons also have a wider rim.
