Hello from the upper left hand corner

You guys are the best! It's funny how knowing some of our relatives fought together helps bring it all to life. I never knew anything about my great great grandpa Lavern until this year and now I just want to know everything I can find out about him and his life and the Civil War.

Hello,
I'm not sure if you've stumbled onto our website yet, but our link is www.B36thIllinois.org . I don't recall if I ended up buying the letter, but I'll try to look through my things when I get a chance. We're actually displaying quite a bit of our 36th items at the Aurora historical society, across the street from the Aurora Post #20, which a lot of 36ers were members of.

Hello Mark, I've been to your website and forum, your forum is where I found my relative looking for information about his (and my) great great grandpa Lavern Stanton. It was a "fall off of my chair moment" for me. And good heavens! if you are the owner of the letter, how weird is that. We just wonder where it was and how it came to be sold.

If I should ever take a trip back east I'll for sure stop by. Both Tolmus and Lavern mustered in at Aurora, Ill on September 23, 1861. And the Lavern re enlisted as a veteran on Jan 25th 1864 at Chattanooga, Tn. That's when he wrote the letter I think, I'd have to go check for sure the date.

I'll spend some more time on your fantastic website later today. I spend a lot of free time combing civil war books and website with Civil war photos, I've had enough luck finding a few things as it is, who knows what else might turn up someday.

Welcome from Georgia

Washington State that is....

Hello all

I joined this forum to learn more about the Civil War and specifically my great great grandpa Lavern Stanton who was in Company H 36th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and his brother Tolmus Stanton, who was also in the 36th Illinois Infantry, Tolmus was killed Dec 31 1862 at Stones River Georgia. He is buried there.

I've found out a few things about them I'll share later and even found a relative on-line on another civil war forum, we share our great great Grandpa Lavern.

One interesting thing about our family, Tolmus Stanton was engaged to a woman named Lydia and they were to be married after the war, sadly Tolmus was killed in battle at Stones River, but then Lavern married Lydia after the war and here I sit writing about it.

I look forward to perusing the forum. I'm retired and I love it, I have time now to study all sorts of things.
Welcome "upper left"!!

What a fabulous family story.

I have 3 cousins in the 36th IL, George Knowles and Ira and Charles Scofield.

Charles, like your ancestor, was also killed at Stones River.
