My name is Andrew and I am a memeber of the reenactment group from Russia. We have special interest in Western Theater. Not long ago we started to reenact artillery and chose Stanford's Mississippi battery. At the moment we have only three cannoneers and so is the question:
Would it be historically uncorrect for reenacting Atlanta campaign to put temporaly as fourth member the man in civilian clothes?
I've just finished to read Larry Daniel's "Cannoneers in gray." On page 173 he gives report of the shortages in Army of Tennessee artillery: 1935 coates, 1974 blankets, 1710 haversacks and 1288 canteens.
Also there is an information about Hudson's "Arsenal" battery, that was used in defence of Atlanta. It was organized from employees of Atlanta Arsenal. Can anyone help with information, how could these battery look like?
Other information about portraying southern cannoneer in 1864 would be welcome.

Welcome from Southern Oregon/northern Jefferson.

I had no idea there were American Civil War reenactment groups in Russia. We do have a number of international members, though, so I know that interest in our war exists in many unusual places.

As to a civilian member in your battery, I can't say it never happened but I've read a lot of histories of batteries and all the classic reminiscences (e.g. Four Years Under Marse Robert by Robert Styles) and have never seen a mention of any civilians manning guns. There are a few famous examples of civilians falling into line with infantry but I think they're famous because it didn't happen very often. I admit I don't know anything about the Hudson's battery you mention but if they were put into service I'd say they were drafted and were not civilians. We've got a number of artillery folks here so hopefully others will provide some perspective.

We do have artillery and a re-enactor's sub-forums where you might think about posting your question. It might get seen by more artillery buffs and re-enactors.

Thank you, John.
As to Hudson's battery, Larry Daniel don't provide information that battery was put in service. So I think it was formed only temporaly and was dismissed after the fall of the city.
