What's the deal with these guys? Early Union high command, who seem to fade into obscurity after 1862. Were they really bad? I'm through the Peninsula Campaign in Foote and my impression is one of mediocrity, but not incompetence, which considering some of the other personalities of the time (Fremont, Banks), seems like a massive outperform (unless they royally screw up in the 2nd Manassas Campaign, but I thought the main AoP units involved were Porters). Were these guys Democrats and purged by the Republican war committee? Something else?
