Hardee Hat

The snipers loved the Hardee hat for they made good targets. They could see them before the soldier. Early in the war soldiers decided to get rid of the Hardee hat and use their forage cap, kepi. That is why they are so rare. Your Bannerman hat will only go up in price. It still is an original Civil War hat. Enjoy!

That is nonsense, the Hardee would continue to be issued through the end of the war, it was a dress hat. Eastern troops disgarded them in favor of the forage cap because it "looked more military" wheras troops in the western theatre preferred them or other wide brimmed hats to the forage cap as it provided shade to the ears and back of the neck.

CWguy. If you look at photo's of Federals around Atlanta you will see a huge majority of modified hardee hats. They were very common.

This is a Bannerman's Civil War surplus Hardee hat. This was an original Union hat
from the Civil War that was never used. Later the original brass parts, and others were applied to
make it more appealing and this one was sold back in the 1940s. These are
wonderful and original, but never used. I have had this one looked at by experts and is
as I have stated.View attachment 59857
Wonder why they used buzzard feathers?

The only cap is being worn by an officer. And the men in this pic represent the typical men of the AoT (US).

If you think those are buzzard feathers... maybe you shouldn't be commenting. If you're just dropping your usual snarky comments to up your post count the same applies.
Well, my man! Enlighten the forum and be the man of the hour. What kind of feathers are they?

You have more to do I am sure than count my post, right? :giggle:

As mentioned. The feathers were Ostrich. Fully dressed Hardee Hats (feathers, cords, brass, side eagle) fell out of favor fairly early on. The Hat itself was worn till the last day of the war and beyond.

And as for the Hat value. Your right, ID'd ones are worth a TON. Personally I would LOVE to own a Bannermans hat. I look at them when I see them, just can't drop that kind of coin yet in life.

I didn't know someone could earn a fictional purple heart. The things one learns on this forum!
The CS never issued a "Confederate Purple Heart" or give any recognition to those wounded in battle. There has been a movement of people wanting to wear medals and awards their gggrandparents would have been eligible for if those medals had existed then. Mostly they're men who never served wearing medals they didn't earn so they have an excuse to feel superior to others. I call it Stolen Valor light.

I find it offensive because I know men who have earned the legitimate purple heart for real.

I think my G-Grand deserved it if I want to give it to him. Cut up real bad at Bethesda Church and survived somehere around the age of 16 married in 3 years at 19 and had a family of 7 children? I think you are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill, my friend.

If it's fictitious then who cares who has it? I mean, if it doesn't really exist who cares?
They also have a CS medal of honor and I've seen both worn with pride as though they've earned such. Like I said I see it as "Stolen Valor light." -shrug- I suppose it's harmless, like someone taking themselves too seriously wearing a Darth Vadar outfit... it's about as legit.

A while back we had a legitimate CMH donated to the museum, we were quite excited but upon checking discovered that displaying it was not only inappropriate but illegal. It was supposed to have been buried with the man. Maybe I would have more respect for those w/ a CS Purple Heart if they saw to it that it was placed where it belonged, with the man who might have earned such.
