If this wasn't written in 1864 I would swear they stole this story from an episode of Lassie.

Can anyone prove this soldier/unit really existed?

Yes. It was the 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. There are 2 John Barry's listed in the 1st Rhode Island. Not sure if its the same guy or 2 different John Barry's Below is the index cards.

When it comes to dogs anything is possible. I have learned it in many ways. It is something, we need not forget, because they don't forget the things we do either. my little dog doesn't let me get to far from her, if she can help it. She watches me and she will come looking for me if she sees me move. This goes on all day and night. She watches me from the bed, or the foot of the bed. Dogs watch over people every day, we just don't always understand the extent of their devotion.

There's a similar story that I vaguely remember - maybe somebody else knows the details. An officer left for war with the family dog, a bird dog I think, and later he was reported killed at Chattanooga. His wife came from Pennsylvania to retrieve his body but didn't know where it was so she was hunting through every graveyard there was. At one of them, here came her old dog! She had thought it was long gone and tried to hug it but the dog moved away, wanted her to follow. Sure enough, it led her to a shallow, unmarked grave - which it had not left except for some food and water. The grave was opened and it was indeed her husband. Thing was, it was off some ways from the rest of the burials - she would never have found it without the dog.
