Amongst civil war Generals the person of Robert E. Lee stands out in almost "rock-star" like fame. He is remembered by many for his military prowess, but to me he is noteworthy more for who he was as a man. He conducted himself with a certain grace that is admirable even by his enemies.

He chose to remain loyal to his home state, his family roots, his own heritage instead of loyalty to the Union.
He made what must have been a difficult decision to join the Southern cause, and did his best. After surrendering to General Grant he lived in peace and showed others that it was time to lay down their differences and resume living as brothers. Forging ahead once more as a Union of people.

May God bless America, and heal our wounds and guide us along our way.

Agreed. Unfortunately, he's been vilified in history but he was a class act,
A true gentleman. Huzzah, General Lee!

"I have fought against the people of the North because I believed they were seeking to wrest from the South its dearest rights. But I have never cherished toward them bitter or vindictive feelings, and have never seen the day when I did not pray for them." - General Robert E. Lee

Happy Birthday Gen. Lee

In honor of the occasion I just had to go to the bookstore and pick up a couple of Civil War books.

Currently reading "Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee" by his son, Capt. Robert E. Lee. The extensive quotes from his letters truly do show a man of uncommon character.
I have that book. A gray hardcover addition that I bought over 20 years ago. A great man and leader he was. Happy birthday Marse Robert.

I took it down off the shelf today and read from it as well. Lee was one of the greatest generals of his era and a true gentleman.

Respectfully,

William
