According to the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society, when Company H. 8th. N.C. Regiment was formed, all members received a hand-forged, D-Guard style short sword. This is one that survives. At the formation of the unit, Rufus A Barrier was the captain. Company H met in what was then North Carolina College (Mt. Pleasant, NC). The building now houses the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society's Museum.
