Guard Against Cavalry.

This unidentified young recruit is demonstrating the defensive position of the front rank in a regiment that's been given the command "Guard Against Cavalry." His fresh, state-issued uniform and white gloves suggest he has not yet "seen the elephant."

It is some sort of statejacket, with shoulderstraps with piping.
it should limit the number of possibilities somewhat.

My guess is that he is wearing a NY State Jacket.
