Hi, y'all. Name's Mara. I'm a graphic designer with a lot of clients in the Civil War field -- museums, nonprofit organizations, other clients who sometimes use Civil War themes in their marketing. As you probably know, we're smack-dab in the middle of Mosby country here, close to many Civil War battlefields and other sites and collections of interest to Civil War historians.

Right now, I'm working on something that references Hawkens Run in Rappahannock County, VA. The stream is believed to have been named for Colonel Rush C. Hawkins, who commanded the 9th New York Volunteers – "Hawkins' Zouaves" – which were active around Amissville during the Civil War. I'm in search of Civil War-era photos that might show a Zouave in the field. The US Treasury and Smithsonian have disappointed me so far.

Is it appropriate to ask any members here with an interest in Zouaves to help me out, if not with historical photos, maybe re-enactors in proper uniform? I want to be accurate and the use will be respectful. Give me a holler if you can help. Thanks a lot! I look forward to having some free time this weekend to look over some of your posts. You seem a nice group.

Welcome aboard from Alabama, try the websites for the 72nd Pennsylvania Volunteers-(The Philadelphia Fire or Baxter's Zouaves) or the New York Fire Zouaves.

Welcome from Canada. I checked out some of the Mosby Confederacy a few years ago from Aldie to Upperville. He pulled off some great stunts during the couple of years he was operating.

Thanks for the speedy welcome.

Redbob, I jumped on your suggestion about the 72nd Pennsylvania and am already learning a lot about Baxter's Zouaves and related info. I do see that the 72nd saw action in (or at least saw something of) Fredericksburg, Culpeper, and (as I guessed) Manassas/Bull Run -- the right neck of the woods for my search. I also found a web site devoted to the 72nd, including resources for re-enactors. I hope I'll be able to find the (full-figure) photo I'm looking for. Thanks for getting me headed int he right direction!

Dave G., yes, Mosby cut quite a swath through these parts! I just now changed my avatar to the sign I designed for the Mosby Museum in Warrenton VA. It's been through a kind of Civil War of its own! Very complicated. Alas, it's no longer open to the public at this time, though the sign remains out front. The museum was his post-War home. Note that the pistols are the models Mosby actually used. They're pointed downward to symbolize Mosby's post-war concentration on reconciliation. He worked in the Grant administration!

Thanks for the speedy welcome.

I'm glad that I could help, having been a firefighter; I seemed to gravitate towards Zouave units that had a firefighting background.

I think you will find past issues of Military Images Magazine most helpful in your search for Civil War photographs.

You folks are impressive -- and so nice! Thanks for all this wonderful information.

Redbob, I have come across the fire reference but didn't realize it had that meaning. I'll have to dig deeper. This is turning into one of the most interesting design jobs I've ever had!

To 7th Mississippi Infantry, I appreciate those contacts. I will follow up, for sure.

Legion Para, I'll see if I can lay hands on those books. Gosh, I wish I had more time. Story of all our lives, right? LOL
