I read somewhere that Confederate crews, in the British tradition, concentrated on broadside fire, whereas American crews liked to aim their guns and fire individually.
 
There was an incentive for nationals of other countries to enlist and serve on CS Commerce Raiders, unlike the CSN vessels in the coastal and river waters, raider crews were given a cut of prize money for their trouble as well as wages. Thta probably attracted some Royal Navy veterans.
