Explosion of a Yankee Shell
A number of shell thrown by the Yankee fleet at our batteries at Genesis Point (about 15 miles south of Savannah, on the Ogeechee River), having failed to explode, were sent to this city. Saturday morning a number of them were transported from the (Savannah, Albany &) Gulf railroad to the Forest City foundry, in the southeastern portion of the city. One of the 15 inch shell was rolled some distance on the ground, when a portion of the loose powder which still remained in it, fell out. A thoughtless person set this powder on fire, which quickly communicated to the shell, and a terrific explosion ensued. The fragments of the shell were scattered in all directions. A piece was thrown nearly to the Gulf railroad depot, and another piece went into the yard of Mr. John Barnwell, living near by. Fortunately no person was seriously injured. We learn that a man was slightly injured by a fragment.
