Any recommendations of a good book on Bleeding Kansas and the related events, time periods etc? Had an ancestor who was a delegate at the Leavenworth Constitution and around during the whole era so have been meaning to learn more about the specific events.

KLSDAD has made a good suggestion. I believe the book is somewhat of a response to everything that has been written about Quantrill (it definitely answers some charges made by Wm. E. Connelley) but, overall, it's a fair-minded book.

Nicole Etcheson's book Bleeding Kansas would be a good start. Jonathan Earle's and Diane Mutti Burke's Bleeding Kansas, Bleeding Missouri is also good.

I would not recommend Donald Gilmore's book. It has several (mainly minor) historical inaccuracies, and is blatantly partisan. There are many other more reputable books about territorial Kansas, including the two listed above.
