Would love to correspond with anyone regarding Gibson County Tennessee involvement in the war. Have relatives who served in both U.S.A. and C.S.A. regiments but have struggled to find letters or much written on the various regiments. Years back someone had responded on here but I was never able to connect.
I live on the East edge of Shelby County. I have come across some soldiers from Gibson County.
Is Newbern in Gibson County? Colonel Tyree Bell was from Newbern and I think he originally formed a company from there.
My relatives served in the 12th and 31st Tennessee Infantry as well as the 12th Kentucky Cavalry on the Confederate side. On the Federal side I know of two. One served with the 7th Tennessee Cavalry (died at Camp Lawton Ga. After transfer from Andersonville) the other in the 6th Tennessee Cavalry. I'm interested in letters, newspaper etc.
I don't have anybody from Gibson County but I have a fair amount from nearby Stewart & Henry County. This line of my family originated in Brunswick County VA and they floated down the Cumberland River arriving in Stewart/Henry County by 1808. Most floated on further to Pope County IL (near Paducah) but several stayed. Here's who I have:
David Stavely: 50th TN. Captured at Fort Donelson and later released. Duty at Port Hudson then the battles of Raymond and Jackson MS before he deserted.
Richard Collier: 50th TN. Died of disease at Port Hudson.
Benjamin Stavely: 14th TN. Captured at Seven Pines then released. Wounded at Shepardstown right after Antietam. He was captured again while recuperating in Stewart County and released once more. He then fought at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania before fading out of the record.
