Maybe only a few would appreciate this... but when I used to live in the Peace Light Inn and Motor court many years ago I would cut across the fields after work to walk to the Pizza shop at Gettysburg college. Some would know, that means I walked right through the the field known as Iverson's pits. Often lighting a cigarette on the way.

Invariably, if it was already dark, as I would approach within about 50yds of the 88th's advanced marker I would hear excited voices and the there would be the 'pop' 'pop' of flashbulbs. As I would climb over the stone wall I would say something like 'nope, sorry not a ghost' and wave.

btw...at the time I did not realize that was Iverson's pits.

and no I have never seen a ghost.

One morning before dawn I went to Devil's Den, the purpose being to determine the lighting conditions of the Round Tops before sunrise. As I approached the base of Big Round Top, much rustling and odd noises were heard all around, and above me especially. I briefly imagined being surrounded by a host of departed spirits, but as the sky gradually brightened the real cause was revealed - dozens of vultures had been roosting in the treetops, flapping their wings and squawking in a peculiar fashion. However, thankfully, no ghosts!

I don't know which is cooler, your story about Iverson's Pits, or the fact that you lived at the Peace Light Inn!

I really hate those vultures--they're creepy! Sometimes they roost over in the trees on the Stoney Hill side of the Wheatfield, sometimes on Bushman Hill, and usually there are some up on Big Round Top. I walk the field a lot and am usually alone, so walking with them overhead staring down at me gives me the creeps.

If they fly up too fast when you honk your horn at them (hey, it's West Texas) they'll puke all over your car. Good times.
