Gettysburg Super Walmart

This was on the news the other day. Plans submitted to the township. For bearings , the road at a 45 degree angle at the top center of the plan map is Hunterstown Road.

Is this the same proposal that's been put forward for years?

In my town, they started by making the property owner a nice offer. The land was within the city limits. They also had their eye on land outside the city limits, just in case. When it came down to the inevitable controversy, Walmart was able to win the stare-down with the city council like this: Either let us build within the city limits and reap all that sales tax revenue, or we will build just outside the city limits and the county will get some tax, but the city won't. I don't think I need to tell everyone what happened.

I don't know how this works in Gettysburg. But if people want to keep them from building on that land, then everyone needs to step up to the plate and make a better deal to the land owner.

It looks like the proposal is for a large commercial development including a Wal-Mart Super Center, along with out-parcels and access roads. The land just west of the proposed development is owned by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. On August 30, GBPA submitted a letter to the Straban Township Planning Commission opposing the development. Here is a link to the page on their website that provides details.

I know I am in the minority, but life has to move on. This land isn't part of the battlefield. We go back to 'we can't save everything' and is a staging ground really the important part here?

If someone else wants to buy the land to preserve it...fine. But if the people who live in that area wants the additional jobs and economic development, then that's their call.
