Image of the cemetery gatehouse taken on July 7, 1863. You can see water in front of the artillery lunettes ( Stewart's Battery, IIRC ) from the heavy rains on July 4th.

Long age, when I first saw this picture, I was curious why the fence posts were stripped. After I gave it some thought I realized that the fence was probably whitewashed and the horizontal boards had been scavenged!

The wood could have been used for fuel for funeral pyres for dead horses or to mark soldier graves in early July.
