Just returned from our visit to Gettysburg with a few photos to share.

That's what I thought also! No other people visible. When we were in LRT in late July 2013 we had virtually to stand in line to have a look down from LRT. You are priviledged indeed.

Not quite to ourselves! However, we did not have to stand in line to see anything! Parking and crowds were minimal, we even talked to General Horace Porter at Little Round Top, then later saw him in front of the Heritage Center. Despite the heavy cloud cover and morning mist, it was still another magical day in a magical place.

Here is part of the pathway of Pickett's Charge taken from the right side of the copse of trees that were the objective

...and here is what part of the inside of Abraham Bryan's barn looks like from a small hole in the door

it was taken through the crescent shaped hole in the door shown below

near this side of his barn is the marker for the 11th Mississippi

We are already anxious for our next trip to Gettysburg!

The crowds were minimal, especially if the parking area at Devil's Den is an indication. There were only a few vehicles in that area while we were visiting General Porter on LRT.

One thing: The "Copse of Trees" being the objective of the target of Pickett's charge is an urban legend started by John Bachelder (who named it that) in the 1880s and propagated with the movie. Nobody will know for sure, but by the way that the troops were converging, it is thought that the target was Ziegler's grove (which can be partially seen in the 6th picture of your first post behind Bryan's House and is the wooded area you go through when you park at the Cemetery Parking lot and walk to the Angle).

I dunno. But I just don't buy that Copse of Trees stuff

I'm glad you finally got to go after your health issues, Mark. Going to Gettysburg always makes me feel better!

 

[Poor Private]

You didn't happen to go by the 1st Michigan Monument did you? A couple weeks ago a good friend passed away, and another reenactor friend placed big wreath on it in his memory. I just wondered what the time limit is when something is placed on a monument.

Today's trip was unusual as we just did a little hopping around on the battlefield. Generally we go with the intention of visiting a particular place. But, today we were not observant while on Sickles Avenue, therefore did not notice a wreath. That does not preclude it being there, it did not catch our attention if it was.

I found myself have more fun in that battlefield when I let it go and let it be and let it flow, instead of have a particular schedule or a goal. For example: I have much more fun when I bring my teenage boys along and we go rock hopping and tree looking vs. when I go alone for a weekend and think that I can figure out day 2 in 3 days (it really requires about 10 and a good amount of trespassing in private property - and day 2 is much easier to follow than day 1; just saying... )

Let it in be and just go with the flow and smell the roses, and take it in, is the way to go in Gettysburg, methinks...

Agree regarding the "let it be" informality! Sometimes, however we have a direct mission to discovery after reading a Gettysburg related piece. Not too often though, as we are most generally more of the "casual visitor" without a schedule or target or schedule.
