LeVan cancels Gettysburg-area casino project

Local businessman David LeVan has canceled his third attempt to bring a casino to the Gettysburg area, according to a Wednesday news release.

LeVan made the announcement that he will not submit an application for Pennsylvania's last available casino and horse racing permit hours before it was due June 14.

LeVan said the uncertainty surrounding the gaming expansion legislation in Harrisburg was the reason for canceling his project.

YAY! For all the developer's laments about lost economic benefits, jobs, prosperity... it doesn't work that way in real life.
"The impact of casinos on local property values is "unambiguously" negative, according to the National Association of Realtors. Casinos do not revive local economies. Communities located within 10 miles of a casino exhibit double the rate of problem gambling. Unsurprisingly, such communities also suffer higher rates of home foreclosure and other forms of economic distress and domestic violence."

Withdrawing their bid surprises me. However, that location is so accessible from so many population areas that I would not be surprised if at some time in the future some business partnership tries to put a casino there. Here in Pennsylvania, it only takes cash into the right hands to make a change such as the number of casino licenses.
