Gettysburg Casino Final Update

Announcement on the news, moments ago. Pennsylvania has awarded a "satellite" casino license to a company to build in York County with "up to 700 slot machines". The first of satellite casino licenses to be awarded.... this round. So a casino can be in York County only 20 to 30 minutes away from Gettysburg... so far.

At least that will not impact the battlefield. York county is so huge that it could be at a place like Fairview that is a Harrisburg suburb...

Poor York! Clueless, on how the companies are trying to come in here- are they concentrating in southern PA with a continued eye on Gettysburg or is it a statewide effort? I understand the economic impact would be ' good ', just such a gosh darn seedy way to raise revenue.

That's not that close to Gettysburg. It is right on I-81 likely between Shippensburg and Chambersburg. About 30-40 minutes West of Gettysburg. Different county and in an already busy location

When you get out of Gettysburg proper, both the historical feel and interest drops off pretty rapidly. Mini casinos elsewhere in south central PA won't have much impact on Gettysburg at all.
Gettysburg gets a double whammy, though, because on top of the NP eating up a lot of tax exempt real estate, it's also a college town. So it has lots of out of town people around pretty much all the time. "Foreigners" is what most small town PA people call them.) They don't like when they perceive that foreigners are dictating their future. (I was one- Gettysburg College, Class of 1984).

Currently, the latest proposed location is in or near a sort-of dying mall area in east York County. Traffic is already bad during the commute hours. Should be interesting...

Marketing studies were done on the amount of people in York County that went elsewhere to gamble - far away like Vegas and A.C. or closer to home like the Hollywood Casino. The business model suggested that there was enough revenue to support a stand-alone operation. If it comes to pass it will have a negative impact. More traffic so need for costly infrastructure improvements. (Or not...) Higher crime so need for more LEOs. (Or not and just have to accept it) Some new jobs but the majority not 'good' ones. Greater drug and prostitution issues. Should be sporty...pun intended

Sorry about the rant - this should not bother Gettysburg.

York, like a lot of old PA industrial towns, is madly trying to find new revenue streams. A dying mall is a new wrinkle in the story.
