This is Captain Beath, who in 1863 was a lieutenant in the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry who
fought at the first day's fight at Gettysburg. They were defeated by the Southerners and Beath removed
his officer's jacket and tied a white rag to his arm which meant he was a medical helper. He worked
for the duration of the battle at the MacPherson's barn field hospital. At first he said that there was no
surgeon there from either side and some of the wounded were stuck to the barn floor by their own blood.
He worked tirelessly helping the wounded of both sides, and is described in at least one published book
and some online sources. To me he was an American hero, who after the war headed the national
GAR for a time. He also was wounded badly late in the war and lost a leg.
