In this Mathew Brady photo of Gen. Meade and Staff, can anyone identify the bearded gentleman seated, with his back turned as if to be pointedly ignoring Meade? I'm sure he's not, but it is an unusual pose.

It is an interesting photograph. Hmm. I was inclined to think it just one of those stiffly posed, era shots? Then noticed a gentleman well, inserted, for want of a better word, between them.

Pretty convinced an awful lot of photos have various elements of significance ( no hidden meanings, we're intended to get it ), lost 150 years later.

Is this guy older than Patrick? Not arguing, Patrick had the white hair but looked awfully lean and vigorous, no?

I don't know who he is, but I suspect the seating was meant more to contribute to the symmetry of the overall group image rather than as a deliberate snub, but anything's possible. Without some historical evidence that it was an intentional insult, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. I like the fellow on the far right with his arms akimbo.

Yes I agree with that. He looks older than Patrick possibly.
Yes. Older and bushier!

EDIT: removed incorrect photo (Marsena Patrick)

He looks like the same individual next to Grant. Same website as referenced on the thread.
On reflection I think you're right.
Trying a google search for "general R. A. Patrick," finds nothing -- no photos at all, except one at several places on Pinterest, who is actually Marsena Patrick. That's what threw me off. What is R. A.'s first name?

I have no idea! Just pulling names out of you know where! but if anyone knows I would sleep well tonight.

My last guess is Thomas Jefferson Jordan from the 9th PA Cavalry.
Is that a wartime photo? The wartime photos of Jordan I have seen show a high forehead, but considerably more hair with the same scraggly beard, but very little grey.
Maybe he aged considerably in combat.

I know Jordan spent some time in prison during the war so that would definitely age you. Everyone on here seems to think the unidentified bearded man is Patrick though. What say you?
