General Longstreet's Gainesville

Former poultry capital? Maybe that explains why the Piedmont Hotel was famous for its fried chicken. Supposedly people came from all over to give it a try. Sadly, we didn't have a chance to try the Longstreet Cafe. I was told it is very good. I really liked the Gainesville area.
It's still illegal to eat chicken with a fork there.

Argh, this breaks my heart. Why does this image tug at me?

I had the same reaction - even got a little misty eyed. Pieces of the past that are so often overlooked always pull on my heart strings. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I often wish more folks reacted this way. It would certainly have a positive effect on historical preservation.

Thanks for the views and kind comments! I can't resist adding just a few more. Hope you enjoy!

Can't you just imagine General Longstreet sitting in this rocker?

The front room displayed numerous authentic documents related to General Longstreet.

Another of my favorites was General Longstreet's commision to become U.S. Surveyor of Customs signed by none other than President U.S Grant.

The museum is home to a fantastic bookroom. I can hear it calling your name @warhorse and @FarawayFriend! I'll meet you there!

The picture below is displayed on the museum's front sign. I wanted a close-up because it supposedly features General Longstreet talking with Woodrow Wilson, Maria Louisa sitting in a rocking chair and daughter, Lulu, playing in the yard. Mrs. Wilson is also seated, rocking their newborn daughter.

Period music was played throughout the day.

Some friendly re-enactors made the day extra special. General Lee even stopped by to pay his respects.

I have visited Gainesville several times and missed these sights. Next time I will take them in. I have relatives there so hopefully I will get an invite soon.
