Lieutenant Colonel Sumner H. Lincoln went out with the regiment as Private in 1861, was appointed Adjutant in February 1863, was wounded in the Wilderness and again at Winchester, was appointed Major in October 1864, and Lieutenant Colonel in January 1865. He was commissioned as Colonel by the Governor of Vermont) June 4th, 1865, but was mustered out as Lieutenant Colonel.

GENERAL SUMNER H. LINCOLN.

General Sumner H. Lincoln, brigadier general of the United States Army, was born in Gardner, Massachusetts, December 21, 1840, a son of the Rev. Sumner and Gratia Eliza (Smith) Lincoln. The latter was a native of New Haven, Connecticut, and a daughter of Dr. Nathan R. Smith, long a distinguished educator and well known as professor of surgery at Yale University.

In the schools of his native town General Lincoln began his education ar1d afterward attended the Winchendon Academy and Norwich University, of Vermont. Practically his entire life has been devoted to the military service of his country.
