Born in Barre, Mass, in 1810, he was a West Point graduate of 1833. Served in 2nd Seminole War and in Mexico and the West. In May 1861, he resigned and offered his services to the State of Virginia. "On August 9, 1861, he was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned command of a brigade in Gen. Braxton Bragg's Army of Pensacola in Florida, although he was a known abolitionist." (from Wiki..) Later had important service at Shiloh (formed "Ruggles Battery"), and served both combat and administrative roles to the end of the war.
My question regards that "he was a known abolitionist." How did that come about? I find it repeatedly mentioned, but never explained. He clearly wasn't an "Abolitionist" (capitalized); he was very possibly a more moderate anti-slavery man. Does anybody know his story?
