I think Gallagher's solution to the problem makes sense. Instead of erasing history by eliminating the monuments, supplement them with additional ones which present different perspectives. Secession was about slavery, but the War was more complicated than that and the aftermath was more complicated than the "Lost Cause" which seems to be the subconscious theme of so many Confederate monuments.

Kudos to Gary Gallagher. I like his proposal to raise people's consciousness about "the difference between history and memory."
