Lieutenant Colonel John A. Steiner indicated that Groff was wounded during the early morning charge on July 3 and brought off the field. In that charge the five right companies of the 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade advanced just west of Spangler's Spring against the rock wall held by Steuart's 37th Virginia, I believe. That was taking place when the 2nd Massachusetts advanced to the vicinity of the spring, followed closely by the 27th Indiana into the meadow.
