In your opinion, what book changed the most minds about the American Civil War era, making sure that what was to follow would never be the same?

Former Confederate General Jubal Early wrote a book " the Lost Cause". We have had a lot of discussion about that particular book. Dixons " the Clansmen " which D.W.Griffith turned into the arguably first major movie blockbuster the 1915 " Birth of a Nation".

Thomas Dixon jr the Clansmen 1905. This book led to the mother of all political propaganda films " Birth of a Nation". You can still rent it on Netflix. Joseph Goebells was heavily influenced by this movie.

I'll throw my hat in the ring. "Plenty Of Blame To Go Around" was certainly an informative move by move account of JEB Stuarts whereabouts leading to the Gettysburg campaign. Certainly dispelling all the myths that he was on a joy ride. Excellent research and detailed events day by day!

Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp, by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

I doubt they can be quantified as changing the most minds, but certainly they had their impact.
Hear, hear! Although I don't think Dred had the impact that Tom did.

I have a theory I can't prove that Uncle Tom's Cabin even contributed to England's never recognizing the Confederacy. The book was a phenomenon in that country, as much as it was here. Indeed, when Harriet and husband Cal toured Europe for a few months in the spring-summer of 1853, the poor woman was mobbed everywhere she went, especially in Britain.
