1….What was the top speed of the CSS Virginia?

2….How long did it take the Virginia to make a 180 degree turn in the water?

3…Who was instrumental in setting up the north's ironclad building program?

4…..What was the name of first Union Navy ship sunk by the CSS Virginia?

5… Before 1865, what date is known as the worst date in the US Navy's history?

1...9 knots, but this may have been the speed of USS Merrimack with engines running only before conversion to an ironclad. The mile-wide turning circle and the time it took to make such a maneuver indicate a slower operational speed.

2...30 minutes.

3...John Ericsson

4...USS Cumberland

5...The Honda Point disaster of September 8, 1923.

Clarification on Question 5: It should read, and I've changed it - Before 1865, what is known as the worst date in US naval history? Thanks.

A. James Eads, who constructed City class ironclads as early as 1861 for service on the Mississippi River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Buchanan_Eads)

B. Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, who decided that the Navy needed an oceangoing ironclad in response to news about construction of the CSS Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Monitor)

C. John Ericsson, who designed the USS Monitor (same source as Welles)

4. USS Cumberland

5. March 8, 1862
