A guy on my team says he has been to this tunnel many times---lives near there and says it's impossible to find if you don't know exactly where it is. Supposedly Morgan blew it up in (Nov 1862? ) . I seem to recall a thread here where it's location was not known or hard to find. He says he'll bring me the GPS coordinates.

It's between Gallatin and Portland. It's not hard to find. I must say though CSX is VERY picky about people being in the tunnel area and regularly arrests people for trespassing on their property. The tunnel is dangerous because of its size. There's only a couple of feet of clearance when there's a train. I've defended a couple of trespassers.

I'll pass it along that he can get arrested for trespassing, but I bet he already knows that. Are you talking about a railroad near 109 that has a short tunnel and a long tunnel?

Yes. That's the Big South Tunnel. There are still earthworks present there that have been catalogued by the Tennessee Wars Commission.

All the more reason to go see it! Well, aside from that getting arrested thing...

Here you go terryb..here is a map that I have on file of getting there.
I've been wanting to get up there. Just haven't a done it yet!!! I've too heard stories about trespasses etc.. Don't know if railroad owns all or some private property ..either way I've heard its hard to get into but worth trying.
Also heard people in that area are " hard" types..like meth heads etc..could be just stories ??

Here's some video of the tunnel:

It shows why they want to discourage trespassers.
As a retired railwayman, who has seen first hand the results of people being hit by trains or electrocuted on live rails and overhead wiring, I can say that was a totally stupid act, anyone in that location who survives and is caught should be prosecuted. Apart from the immediate damage to the individual, the trauma caused to rail staff and the emergency services dealing with those results, there is the ongoing effect on family and friends.
