My brother and I recently visited Ft. Delaware where some of our ancestors were held after the Battle of Gettysburg. Some of the units held here were the 26th GA and the 8th FL. Many Federal guards as well as thousands of Confederates died of disease here and were originally buried on the island- Pea Patch Island. However, the legend is that the bodies resurfaced and then had to be buried at Finn's Point in New Jersey. The barracks for prisoners that you can see were built off to the side of the fort and consisted of three tiers of bunks. There was not enough room inside Ft. Delaware to hold all of the prisoners and there were only several hundred guards compared to thousands of Confederate prisoners.View attachment 160713 [AView attachment 160712 View attachment 160714 View attachment 160715

Thanks for a great thread. Visited there when I was a kid living in that part of the world many moons ago. Sounds like they are doing some good stuff there, going to have to try to plan visit

Definitely have to plan that. We actually didn't see most of the fort because we took one of the ferries that left later in the day. We had biked to the ferry dock from 10 miles out. The trip we made was specifically to see the barracks because we had never seen the prisoners barracks. We did manage to hike around the island a bit and there is a one mile trail as well.

Outstanding! This is just a great thread. Due to being a relative latecomer to Civil War history,this is the kinda stuff I probably would never have known if not for being a member of this forum.

Tex thanks for your feedback. That's why we do this. Education is key for understanding the real cost of the Civil War on both sides.

For what it is worth, the most Southern American accent I ever heard (and I visit Southern family all the time) was from a waitress in a restaurant in Sussex County, Delaware and she was not reenacting anything.

The two Southern counties in Delaware Sussex and Kent County were in favor of Southern Independence. Many of the Delaware men ended up fighting in Virginia units.

Took a picture of Ft. Delaware from the New Jersey side at Fort Mott yesterday. The Delaware River was as placid as I have ever seen it.

I'm glad I was able to join y'all this year.

Every year on the second weekend of May our Sons of Union Veterans camp, Col. Louis R. Francine, Camp #7, holds a memorial service in conjunction with the Poole Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. It is a highlight of our year and is ALWAYS a pleasure honoring the Confederate soldiers buried at Finn's Point as well as the guards who died there.

Never too many threads on Fort Delaware. The public needs to know how many civilians and soldiers died here. At Finns Point across from the Fort you can see the graves in the ground still. Not too many people know about these sites.
