One of the issues that separated the North and south was free labor and slave labor. If the North had used slave labor instead of free labor would the sections still have grown differently?

1. One could argue that the nation would have been much better off if the North had relied on slave labor and avoided the use of free labor. This would have limited immigration and encouraged the purchase of slaves. If both sections of the nation would have relied on slave labor they would have developed much the same.

2. Still the North would probably used the slaves in industrial settings and the North might well be more industrialized. This could have caused sectional differences.

So would American be a better place if the North had relied on slave labor?
