Have always seen roughly half million divided between slave states and free state/territories.
Assume the 261,918 free in south were indeed free as would been hard to live there without freedom/emancipation papers.
If the census had the same accuracy in counting free as actually free for the 226,152 in the north.........what would be number of fugitives in free states?
I've always wondered If the northern number was verified free, or simply took what they claimed, and would included fugitives? If not, there would been some number of fugitives living in the north also?
If census went house to house, wouldn't it include fugitives? Then throwing number of free blacks into question?
