I know. I know. One day?!? It sounds crazy to me too, but it looks like that's all the time we will have. We'll be passing through there on a trip to Maryland at the end of August. The trip is connected to business (I'm providing staff development for a Maryland school district) so we're just adding on a wee bit of fun.

Of course we'll visit the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania Battlefield and Ellwood. I have to see where Longstreet was wounded (Is that well marked?) and where Stonewall's arm is buried. Any other recommendations for must-see attractions? Remember we get up at the crack of dawn when we travel and "get a move on."

Anyone visited Chatham Manor (I saw the lovely thread) and Kenmore Plantation? If I have to pick one, which one do I pick? Shhh. I may be able to persuade the hubby to stay a little bit longer. :sneaky: He kinda likes me and I can be very persuasive at times.

I read that the 2400 Diner is a great spot for breakfast and I'm sure we'll have dinner at the Bavarian Chef because it's located in the old train station.

Help me out friends!!!

By the way, you inspired me @Jimklag with your bucket list thread! Just saying!

Go to Colonial Tavern just down the street from the NPS visitor center. Good beer/ale, Irish food.

My favorite place in Fredericksburg.

The last time I was there they had Smithwick's and Harp on tap and a lot of other good ones in bottles. So many sips and so little time. Have fun. BTW, J. Brian's tap room is good too. Right downtown on Hanover St.

I like to play coy and get the bartender to let me taste different ones that are on tap. Of course, I'm an honorable woman so I buy a mug of my favorite!

Along with the taprooms I've mentioned, Virginia Hwy 3, the famous Orange Turnpike, is a treasure trove. Salem Church is just west of town; there's a new spot on the north side of the road for checking out day 1 of Chancellorsville; the famous intersection of Brock Road/Orange Plank Road is about a half mile south of the turnpike; the ruins of the Chancellorsville house are right on the turnpike. You can see Hazel Grove, up the hill to the southwest of the ruins. I'm telling you, Eleanor, Fredricksburg and vicinity will be hard to do in one day.

Ellwood may or may not be open when you visit. I made my wife and I spend a day in Fredericksburg before embarking to Charlottesville for a wine weekend in 2016. Anyway, Ellwood was not open for us, and this was in April. However, we did park at the entrance in the woods, there was room for 2 cars I think...we quickly ran down the driveway, walked around and snapped photos and came back. No harm done, but I think it is seasonal. I saw your comment about Longstreets wounding. I didnt visit the Wilderness, but I assume its within that park...And if you are lucky someone here with a Blue and Gray subscription may share their free download of the Wilderness battle tour. Or maybe you are a subscriber as they are offering a free download of the Wilderness..

Fredericksburg, via the NPS tour wont take you too long. I would double your time if you will walk the Slaughter Pen Farm/Pelham's corner. We also did a quick tour of Chancellorsville using the NPS map given the next morning on our way out of town. Chancellorsville does have a nice visitors Center...That area makes my head spin when trying to "do it all" as far as Civil War goes. I find myself going to www.hmdb.org for historic markers as part of my research for visiting...nothing but red markers everywhere...

We tried to eat at the Bavarian Chef, but we didnt have a reservation and it was a long wait even for 2...suggest getting a reservation.

You cant go wrong with anything you do there, whether it is one thing or 500. Enjoy the trip!

Start your visit at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Museum on Lafayette Blvd. Walk the old sunken road to see sites of Marye Heights. Walk up the hill to the Federal Cemetery if you desire to see it. Then head into the city on Lafayette Blvd. Turn left on Caroline Street. Then turn right on Wolfe St. park in the Parking garage. Walk back to Caroline Street turn right to walk the street. You'll find shops and restaurants on Caroline or a few blocks up William St. After lunch go west on Caroline Street and turn left onto Amelia Street. Go to T intersection and turn right onto Washington Ave. Kenmore Plantation House will be several blocks on right. Well worth a tour. Afterwards, make a U turn and go back to William St. turn left go several blocks to Charles Street turn right the James Monroe Law office is on the right for another tour. Go back to William St. and turn right. Keep across the Chatham bridge on RT3 east. Go approx. 2 miles and Georg Washington's boyhood home is on the right. After visiting make a U-turn go back to Chatham Heights turn right at last stoplight prior to the bridge Chatham Manor entrance will be on left for final tour. Afterwards you can dine at many restaurants on William St. You will have to go back across bridge , turn right onto Sophia St. ,go one block to Amelia St. and turn left. Go to T intersection turn left go one block and make a left onto William St. Many good restaurants will line the next several blocks for dinner. Full days visit but please return to visit many more attractions.
