Fredericksburg after the battle

Hello all,
Was Fredericksburg ever occupied again after the battles (both First and Second)? I know that on April 16, 1865, Fitzhugh's command was there, but due to the size of the command and the events occurring at that time, I wouldn't say it was for a strategic purpose. I would've thought there would be some Confederate activity in that region, whether it be partisans, a cavalry raid, or militia.

V46P1 pp 1305. Fitzhugh commanded an independent company/battalion of detached men and partisan rangers that operated on the Chesapeake for much of the war. He also commanded a company of scouts during Rosser's Valley Raid in early 1865.

The Army of the Potomac used it during part of the Overland Campaign. Believe it was part of their supply line due to its location relative to the federal army line of advance. I'm not sure exactly when federal forces would've vacated that area when their supply line shifted south to the Pamunkey/James Rivers.

Oh yes, now that you mention it, I reread V36 of the OR, and I found Fredericksburg listed prominently again ... it appears to be where troops from Washington were shuttled through to join the AoP.

Though it is Historical Fiction, it does give an accurate build-up to the overland campaign in 1864. Fredericksburg was taken by the Yankees moving up the Rappahannock River and used to remove many wounded arrivals there to hospitals due north.

Go to the link below and scroll to the RF&P and you will find RR iron removal operations in the Fredericksburg area for much of 1863, after August, and again in 1864, starting in August and ending in December. Clearly, no combat commands were involved most of the time, by either side. If the Union was using Acquia Creek as a staging point for troops movements, they were not aware of the handful of slaves and workers taking up the RR just a mile or two away.
