This was last year - but it's the second Douglass statue that has been torn down. The other was in 2018.

"According to Rochester police, the Maplewood statue was left about 50 feet from its pedestal damaged on the base and lower portion of the statue. Reports say the statue is damaged beyond repair and will have to be replaced. The location of the statue was in a historically significant place because it is where Douglass and Harriet Tubman would move slaves along the Underground Railroad to freedom."

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was ripped from its base in Rochester on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches, delivered in that city in 1852.

Police said the statue of Douglass was taken on Sunday from Maplewood Park, a site along the Underground Railroad where Douglass and Harriet Tubman helped shuttle slaves to freedom.

The statue was found at the brink of the Genesee River gorge about 50 feet from its pedestal, police said. There was damage to the base and a finger.

Wow, the pickings must be getting slim. This and the previous thread are recycling year-old stories.

I remember pointing out how the toppled monument thing seemed to taper off last year, but some predicted that it would resume with the warm weather this year. That did not seem to happen. Maybe posters need to start checking the dates on these articles. It's hard to muster the outrage about the same stories over and over again.

Here's one from last year that hasn't been posted. A memorial to the 77th NY Volunteers.

The last one has been fixed.

Carol Grissom, in her amazing book, "Zinc Sculpture in America 1850-1950" (University of Delaware Press, 2009) has something to say about this statue. It was produced by the J.W. Fiske company over several decades and Grissom identifies well over a dozen castings of it, located in nine different states.
