Biography
Branson was born in 1834 in Grayson County, VA (now Carroll County). Branson married Margaret Catherine "Kittie" Umbarger and together they had seven children. He never saw his first or last child; the first born, Mary died in infancy while he was in Missouri; then he died at the age of 49 in 1883, one month before his last child, Alice was born.
Military Service
Branson Coltrane was 23 years old when he entered VMI in August 1857, was a cadet for four years and graduated in 1861, number nine of 17 graduates. With the outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861, the Cadet Corps was moved to Richmond to serve as drill instructors at Camp Lee. Members of this class received their diplomas in Richmond on July 4, 1861.
Commissioned as Second Lieutenant, Confederate Army Commissioned First Lieutenant, Provisional Army of Virginia, December 8, 1862 Commanded the First Virginia Battalion until 1865, transferred to the 24th Virginia Regiment of Infantry, Captain of Company C (the Carroll Boys)

Branson was captured on April 6, 1865 by Union forces at Sayler's Creek, VA, the last skirmish before Appomattox. He was sent to Johnson's Island, OH as a prisoner of war. He was released on June 18,1865, took a stagecoach to Petersburg, VA and walked home to Hillsville, VA, over 270 miles by today's roads.
Branson Coltrane was a Prisoner of War during the United States Civil War.
