And as @Blockaderunner showed us a more modern German gun, I can show you one of the first cannons ever, at least 600 years old.
Notice that the barrel could be put apart to insert the cannonball!

I thought I posted this when I first saw this but somehow missed it. Please forgive the tourists in the background. This is the cannon to the right of the entrance of Fort Sumter when you first enter. (I also noticed that it is currently aimed to destroy the fort :unsure:

This of course is the retracted position to load and reload; once loaded, the gun is pushed forward on it's carriage and the recoil when fired brings it back into this position for reloading. Also, this would be the NORMAL position for storage to help alleviate damage of the muzzle from exposure to the elements. (The bore would be secured and protected by a wooden plug called a tompion.)
