Can you read the first signature?

I didn't post this, so don't know how it was that my name's gotten attached to it; however, the bottom signature on it looks like it says Joel H. Elliott, over Capt. 7th Ind.(presumably Indiana) Cav. and Provost Marshal. Interestingly, there was a Major Joel Elliott who was killed at the Battle of the Washita in 1867 as an officer in Custer's famous 7th U. S. Cavalry; however, I don't think this is the same man, because as I understand it, that Elliott had only served as an enlisted man during the Civil War and owed his later promotion to the highly unusual method of having had a remarkably high score on a test qualifying veterans for retention and promotion in the postwar army.

I get a Notice someone has quoted me and sometimes it links back to a page of the thread that doesn't even have my post. I'm sure it is something I'm doing wrong.
I just noticed this new icon on my Google Menu.
The real icon is the lower one with the Star. Then there is a second icon---which isn't unusual to have 2 of them--- but it looks different. I thought it was reversed; US flag and CS Flag.

BTW-- during my drive this weekend through Alabama I saw a CWT Flag flying in front of a house. Half of the flag was a CS Flag and other was the US flag with the star field. I didn't a photo but I thought about stopping and knocking on the door to see if it was one of our Mediators for CWT.

I realized that, but like you I can't make it out either; however, that attracted my attention to Capt. Elliott's signature which previously I'd missed. It looks like it might be C. W. ? Payne but I can't be sure.

That would make a good thread---if there isn't already one on Custer's 7th Cavalry. I'm not a student of Custer's Last Stand but it would interesting to read about the troopers who fought there and their previous military service in the Civil War.
In our local Antique Mall, there is a booth that has several books on Little Big Horn. The subjects vary from weapons, archaeology and one book on the history before the battle and the mistakes made by the Army commander.

This button is my shining glory. I found this at Harts Ford, in Culpeper County Virginia. J.E.B. Stuart and his staff supposedly visited the old house that was beside the ford a time or two during the war. The house is in ruins now.
