I didn't post this, so don't know how it was that my name's gotten attached to it; however, the bottom signature on it looks like it says Joel H. Elliott, over Capt. 7th Ind.(presumably Indiana) Cav. and Provost Marshal. Interestingly, there was a Major Joel Elliott who was killed at the Battle of the Washita in 1867 as an officer in Custer's famous 7th U. S. Cavalry; however, I don't think this is the same man, because as I understand it, that Elliott had only served as an enlisted man during the Civil War and owed his later promotion to the highly unusual method of having had a remarkably high score on a test qualifying veterans for retention and promotion in the postwar army.Can you read the first signature?
