NF Fortunate Find

A friend of mine ran across a couple of shelves of ACW books at a Goodwill Thrift Store two days ago. As the books were only 99 cents each, he purchased them all, thinking I would want them. He was right, I did! I bought them from him for his purchase price and bought him lunch yesterday. There are 48 books, see photo. The books are both hard and soft bound, but more hard bound than soft. I had 13 of them already, but the rest will be new additions to my ACW book collection. After I got them home, I discovered that they were from a fellow ACW buff who passed away in December. I didn't know him real well, but knew he had a nice library. This would only be a small fraction of what he had. We are on the look out for the rest. Nice to have a friend who would do that and happy with the good luck in getting these books!

Fortunate indeed. That's a steal. I've been meaning to find the Goodwill Thrift Store nearest me to check their book inventory periodically.

I try to check my local Good Will store bookshelf whenever I can. I have found some good titles -- Civil War history and otherwise -- and the price is right!

Just last week I picked up four books. My wife rolled her eyes quite expressively, but can't really complain at these prices.

I'm a former Assistant Branch Head Librarian. Started as a part time Tech. I was there for almost 10 years but lost my job back in 2005 due to dirty local politics. I miss it in many ways.

You did extremely well! I think I broke Goodwill here in NH, at least locally. They no longer carry history books and they told me they Ebay them. The last good history book I got was James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom - but... it was the $99.00 one! The big, illustrated, coffee table size one. It was on the Goodwill shelf and I couldn't believe it! I took it to the register and they asked me where I got it, and I said over there in the history section where the sign said, "History Books $1.00 Today" Apparently the help placed it there by mistake. It had a different bar code on it and they said it was supposed to be Ebayed. I said, I picked it up off the shelf. They called the manager over and he said, that's where she got it so sell it for the $1.00. Since then, no more history books at any of the 3 Goodwills in my local area.

I also went into the Goodwill in Westminster in PA thinking they would have a TON of Civil War books since they are only 45 minutes from Gettysburg AND one of the largest Goodwills outside of DC. Nothing - they have a ton of paperback fiction but no history books. I've never seen a larger Goodwill either.

I see Mark Boatner's Civil War Dictionary, which is a great desk reference. It may be worthwhile to publish a "Warning" on shopping Goodwill. It is "Highly Addictive".

Nice score!!!! worth every bit of $48!!!

Some friends of mine that used to be night time curbside trash pickers in PA (close to Philly) found and gave me a copy of "McClellan's Own Story," the illustrated edition dated 1886 and marked in ink pen by the purchaser; the day it was purchased, April 1887 and "finally read 3/20/88." It's in fantastic condition....amazing what get's left out in a box off old books sitting on the roadside for the next day's municipal trash service to scoop up then be gone forever. My book is a big rescue. Glad I have it...…….not sure how much it's worth however.....maybe others would have an idea of the value
