Most of us know the stories of the officers of the Fort Sumter garrison: Seymour, Doubleday, Crawford, Davis, Foster, and Anderson became generals; Hall became colonel of the famed Harvard Regiment; Talbot and Snyder died of illness; and Meade joined the Confederacy. However, when looking through my notes, I noticed a few recognizable names among the garrison noncoms, of the nine sergeants and five corporals (not including the band). I have all listed below:
- Ordnance Sergeant James Kearney: Was commissioned as Captain (E), 67th Pennsylvania Infantry on 2/18/62; resigned 5/19/63. Source
- Quartermaster Sergeant William H. Hammer: Was commissioned as Lieutenant (G), 3rd Rhode Island Infantry on 10/17/61; promoted Captain 6/9/63; mustered out 8/4/65. Source
- 1st Sergeant Eugene Scheibner (E): Nothing that I could find.
- Sgt. Thomas Kiernan (E): Nothing that I could find.
- Sgt. William A. Harn (E): Was commissioned as Lieutenant (G), 1st New York Light Artillery on 3/1/62; promoted Captain 3rd New York Battery 4/13/63; mustered out 6/24/65. Source
- Sgt. James Chester (E): Was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd US Artillery on 4/17/63 (fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg); promoted Lieutenant 1/14/65. Source
- Cpl. Owen McGuire (E): Nothing that I could find.
- Cpl. Francis J. Oakes (E): Promoted to sergeant; discharged 5/1/66. Source
- Cpl. Charles Bringhurst (E): Promoted to sergeant. Source
- Cpl. Henry Ellerbrook (E): Nothing that I could find.
- 1st Sgt. John Renehan (H): Died 1/66. Source
- Sgt. James McMahon (H): Promoted to Ordnance Sergeant. Source
- Sgt. John Carmody (H): Nothing that I could find.
- Sgt. John Otto (H): Discharged 12/8/62. Source
- Cpl. Christopher Costolan (H): Nothing that I could find.

If anybody could find information on Scheibner, Kiernan, McGuire, Ellerbrook, Carmody, or Costolan, that be great!

So far, it seems that Hammer, Harn, and Chester had the most action in the war.

Capt. James Chester, in a 1911 news article said of Carmody:
