Following Grierson's Raid

Not Civil War related but we also saw the site of the Lynard Skynard plane crash.
An interesting news segment about this site:

The Lynerd Skynerd crash site is only a mile or two from where Grierson met his final Confederate opposition before crossing into Louisiana.
Not much to see these days, but it was portrayed in the Hollywood version of Grierson's raid ... " The Horse Soldiers".

( One of the last scenes ... when John Wayne was trying to lead his cavalry over the last bridge ... before it was blown-up )

And lastly is Union Church and it's cemetary. This was one of several diversonary routes taken by Grierson and a battle was fought in the cemetary, leading the Confederates to be confused by Grieson's route. Grieson retreated from the battle and resumed his original planned route to Baton Rouge. Several of the headstones had damage from the battle.

During Union Church diversion Grierson took off west from Hazlehurst toward Gallatin, 5 miles away, which was then the seat of Copiah County. My g-g grandparents lived there and as he was the county treasurer a party of the Yanks made a visit to their home. Four of their older sons were off to war, my great grandfather was one of them and he and his brother would soon be trapped inside the Vicksburg defenses.

I posted this about a year and a half ago but thought I'd add it to this thread. I wish Dr. Tim Smith would add their still standing house to his tour. Maybe he will next time.

yes, we made a brief stop at the Hazlehurst train station (postwar) and drove thru Gallatin. It was an interesting tour and definitely went to some places you only go if your lost or going there intentionally, LOL.

I should add that the white building is a wartime structure. A fire of unknown source broke out in town and the federal troopers helped form a bucket brigade to save the structure

Good job. Tim Smith is one of my favorite authors. He spoke at our round table last year about Grierson's raid. I enjoyed when he compared "Horse Soldiers" to actual events. These "following in the footsteps" type of excursions is one of my favorite activities.
