I just recently got back from the BGES tour following Grierson's Raid with historian/author Tim Smith. Here are a few photos for your viewing. This is the Walter Place in Holly Springs, Ms. Mrs. U.S. Grant and son stayed in this house while visiting Gen. Grant.

Second up, this the road that Greison's Command rode down (away from the camera) as they left LaGrange, Tn

Third is the Lochinvar Plantation in Pontotoc, Ms. This was one of the overnight bivoucs of the command while on the raid.

The next two are Newton, Ms. Although the movie "The Horse Soldiers" had an in-town fignt occuring here, there was no battle, however the tracks were destroyed. The structure is postwar.

Here is one of the multiple river crossings that were made, sadly I dont remember which one-I just thought it was a cool picture.

And lastly is Union Church and it's cemetary. This was one of several diversonary routes taken by Grierson and a battle was fought in the cemetary, leading the Confederates to be confused by Grieson's route. Grieson retreated from the battle and resumed his original planned route to Baton Rouge. Several of the headstones had damage from the battle.

Awww, that would have been a great tour.
Is this house located on the East side of town? I need to review my photos. I wanted to get a photo of one historical house there but the trees blocked any good photo.

Thanks for sharing these.

I have to confess my internal compass had "tumbled" by the time we got there but I believe it was just west of downtown at 300 W Chulahoma Ave, Holly Springs, MS 38635 according to Google.

This is the house I mentioned that I could not get a shot of. Marker is on Salem Avenue (State Highway 4) east of West Street.
{West Street is East of the town square.}

This is all that I could see.

See the above Link for history and more photos. I find it interesting that the house as connection to General James R. Chalmers, who later moved into the home his father built in Byhalia, called Thistledome.

Tim talked about this and the restoration of it but we did not drive by there as we were running out of time and had an appoitnment to meet the museum director in LaGrange. He did mention at some point there was confusion as to where Gen Grant actually stayed-here or at Walter Place.

Thank you that was interesting. There is much to see in MS. I don't think the terrain has changed much since the Civil War.
I was about to say the same thing.

Grierson's Raid, was quite a distance.
La Grange, Tennessee to Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a long journey under the best peace time conditions.

I live along the Mississippi/Louisiana border where Grierson crossed into Louisiana and made his final lap toward safety at Union occupied Baton Rouge.

You are correct ... other than modern roads, the terrain remains almost identical to the 1863 landscape.

@stu613 's last photo of the church and cemetery at Union Church is a perfect example of such.

I think parts of Georgia are unchanged too. Some parts of TN as well. Outside the big citys. I love driving the Civil War Trails.

Some parts of TN as well.
Very true.

I've only been to La Grange, TN a couple of times, but it seems authentic.
The entire raid is a very different ( start/finish) landscape for Col. Grierson.

The major photos have been posted, but as I drive by the same landmarks daily,
there's not much to photograph.

Pine trees, cotton fields and pasture look the same in 2023 as during the 1860's.
