If one of your relatives on his company muster record has under remarks--Extra Duty, Secret Service, Brig HQ is that as cool as it sounds, or is it just some escort/bodyguard service?

Whats a really funny coincidence is his name was John J...….wasnt that Rambo's?

It would depend on what the extra duty was. In my years in the US Army you never wanted extra duty, That could mean KP or Fire Guard etc. SS would be cool but that could be scouting going into town in civies to see whats going on. Brig HQ could be a courier duty, guard duty etc.

It says a little more but not very legible, after that it said grs?, some initials SO? then nov-jan 7th 1865

Whats his name and unit or post it here and I'm sure we can see if we can clean the image and try and see what it says. There some very good folks here that can help translate but I'm not one of them as I'm blind in one eye and can't hear out of the other.

Secret Service usually meant spying duty behind enemy lines.

I can't make out that "G" part. The next does look like "SO" to me, but I wear thick glasses for a reason. Would love to have someone else with better eyes/more familiarity with CSRs look at it.
