I've identified three distant relatives in the Vail family who were of military age during the War:

1) Edward Brundage Vail, born July 21 1832 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York; died April 18, 1866 in New York City, New York County, New York.

2) Thomas Clinch Vail, born May 4, 1837 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York; died October 16, 1889 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York.

3) Joseph William Vail, born March 12, 1840 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York; died February 1, 1908 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York.

All were sons of William Vail Jr. (1808-1882) and Nancy Howe Vail (1811-1880) of North Salem.

Can anybody out there with easy access to Fold 3 tell if any of these men have a military record for the War?

1) Edward Brundage Vail, born July 21 1832 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York; died April 18, 1866 in New York City, New York County, New York.

3) Joseph William Vail, born March 12, 1840 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York; died February 1, 1908 in North Salem, Westchester County, New York.

ETA: I also looked them up on Ancestry, and there's a tree that gives lots of details on these three, but does not list any military service. for them.

Thanks. There doesn't seem to have been any enthusiasm for the War amongst the North Salem Vails. My great great grandfather, Charles Hubert Vail, was drafted in 1863 but managed an exemption. He had two brothers, but there isn't any record (that I can find) that they ever went in the army. The three fellows I've listed were Charles Hubert's first cousins.

I'm unfamiliar with Ancestry.com. Can you link it to me?

Right age, & name... It isn't unheard of to serve in a different state....

These are from user-created trees in Ancestry. They are, unfortunately, only as reliable as the person compiling them, which is an unknown. But these might give additional leads.

Thanks Andy. I have been meaning to visit the North Salem Historical Society to review their collection. I'm told they have some material on the family, but I don't know how much.
