Looking for John Day of the 8th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. I believe he was a Sergaent, although likely enlisted as a Private.

Edit: Ooops, meant 7th Connecticut Infantry, not Eighth...

Did not find any John Day in the Eighth Infantry, but there was a Sergeant John Day in the Seventh. Index cards only.

Does that mean that that is all there is in the file?

There's nothing but the index card on Fold3 -- that site is complete for CS units, but only some states have complete Union records, and Connecticut is not one of those. I found the Andersonville record -- it that's the guy -- through Ancestry.

Hunh...I didn't realize. Does that mean I have to go to the National Archives to get the complete record?

It might. Some states (e.g., New York) published extensive state Adjutant General reports later on that gave additional details of mens' service records, but I don't know if Connecticut did. But to see all the Compiled Service Record cards, you may have to order copies from NARA. Sorry.

Fold3 has complete CS records because many years ago the United Daughters of the Confederacy paid to have them all microfilmed, that later made it easy to index and digitize. There was no such comprehensive effort of the Union side of things.

Many thanks, Andy!

Looks like I'm headed for the National Archive on this one. It will be a first for me.

This is an especially hard one since I need to learn something about Day's post-war residences and pension eligibility.

FYI -- Adjutant General of Connecticut did publish extensive reports about the service records of state citizens. I am not aware, however, that these reports were ever collated or indexed.

Thanks again, East.

Looks like neither of the two John Days in the 7th Conn. is the man I am looking for.

The quest continues!!
