As I've posted in 3-4 other threads in the last 2 weeks,I took my mother to visit her brother in Sneads,Florida a coupla weeks ago. The first full day we were there we visited cemeteries where my CW ancestors are buried, one in Carolina,Covington County,Alabama, the other in Ponce de Leon,Florida. The best route between the 2 takes you through the town of Florala,Alabama, also in Covington County, via SH 54. As the town name implies,it is right on the Alabama/Florida state line. The main drag through town is 5th Avenue, which runs E-W. One block south of 5th Avenue is Lake Jackson which straddles the Alabama/Florida state line. It really is a picturesque little town. By the way,gas is cheaper in Alabama than Florida. There's your Civil War Traveler's Companion tip for this thread. :D We went to the cemetery in Carolina,AL first and passed the above monument on 5th Avenue on the west end of Florala. Took the same route back going to the cemetery in Ponce de Leon and stopped to take pictures of the monument. This pic is looking north. Wish a little wind had been blowing to whip the flag up a bit.

I always go thru there when I go to the beach down hwy 331.

I walked around the monument and took pictures of each of the 4 sides. If you zoom and read them, you can clearly tell where the sympathies lie of the persons/entity that erected it. :D Looking east. Again SH 54 aka 5th Avenue is to the right.:

Looking west. That's my truck parked in the church parking lot in the upper right. I had an uneasy feeling the whole time I was walking around, looking at and taking pics of that monument. I never was sure whether I was on private or public property. It was not fenced, but there weren't any signs either.

Looking south. A list of the folks who donated/contributed to have the monument made and erected. I could find nothing on the monument that said when it was put there. That's it. Thanks for looking.

If I had been traveling solo,I probably woulda stopped in town and poked around a bit. Saw what looked like a pretty nice park on the lake shore.

There is a beautiful lake in Florala well worth the stop. When I was a boy we would always stop there for a picnic to break up the drive and my brother and I would swim in it.

Florala has always been a nice little town. I use to go thru there on my annual trips to Florida when I lived near Tuscaloosa. Glad to see they're still defending the heritage. And thanks for sharing the pictures.
