Interestingly enough, while this very good regiment was the only one not actively engaged in the fighting, it nevertheless suffered the only fatality in Macintosh's brigade. Go figure.

And Smith was promoted to brigadier general during the war, and awarded a Medal of Honor after the war for his valor at the Battle of Samaria (St. Mary's) Church on June 24, 1864. He was a good soldier.
