Lieutenant Colonel Charles Henry Smith and Major Stephen Boothby of the First Maine Cavalry were graduates of Waterville College (now Colby College) in Maine, with Smith in the Class of 1856 and Boothby in the Class of 1857.
 
Lieutenant Colonel Charles Henry Smith and Major Stephen Boothby of the First Maine Cavalry were graduates of Waterville College (now Colby College) in Maine, with Smith in the Class of 1856 and Boothby in the Class of 1857.

And Smith was promoted to brigadier general during the war, and awarded a Medal of Honor after the war for his valor at the Battle of Samaria (St. Mary's) Church on June 24, 1864. He was a good soldier.
